One of my previous bosses gave me a gift several years ago.

The way he planned his week has helped me:

  • Keep a level-head,
  • Make steady progress, and
  • Avoid burnout due to overwork or stress.

Here’s a broad overview of his method.

Cut your day into “thirds”

Divide your day into three 4-hour blocks:

  • Morning: 8:00–12:00pm
  • Afternoon: 1:00–5:00pm
  • Evening: 6:00–10:00pm

Balance your week

Schedule 11 thirds per week:

  • One for administrative tasks,
  • Five for meetings, and
  • Five for working alone.

Prioritise rest to rejuvenate

Take one day off per week.

If you need to work more than 11 thirds in a week, take the extra third(s) off the following week.

This method is just as valuable to me today as it was back when I first learnt it.

If you give it a go, please let me know how you get along.
