Each year has four seasons.

Each season is unique. These differences remind me that I can’t do everything at once. It’s the same with our obligations, chores, recreational activities and hobbies.

Here are four ways to divide your time and make the most of it.

1. Prioritise your obligations

Obligations are tasks we’re expected to do.

Obligations are non-negotiable. We must complete them by a specified time. We don’t often enjoy them. But they’re essential for meeting other people’s expectations.

Examples include:

  • Academic or work responsibilities
  • Attending important events
  • Commitments you make to others
  • Going to work or school
  • Meeting deadlines
  • Paying bills
  • Taking care of family members

Fulfilling these commitments builds and maintains trust in our personal and professional lives.

2. Manage your chores

Chores are routine household tasks.

They’re essential for maintaining our living spaces and personal hygiene. Chores are often considered dull and repetitive. Yet, completing them has a positive impact on our mental and physical health.

Examples include:

  • Cleaning the house
  • Cooking meals
  • Doing laundry
  • Grocery shopping
  • Mowing the lawn
  • Running errands
  • Washing dishes

3. Indulge in recreation

Recreation involves activities we choose to do in our spare time to relax and enjoy ourselves.

Examples include:

  • Going on vacation
  • Playing sport
  • Reading a book
  • Spending time with friends
  • Walking in nature
  • Watching a movie

Recreation helps us unwind and recharge.

4. Pursue your hobbies

Hobbies our activities we’re passionate about, enjoy and pursue.

They can be a creative outlet, a way to learn new skills, or a source of relaxation. Hobbies allow us to explore our interests. They often focus on personal development and self-expression.

Hobbies include a wide range of activities, such as:

  • Cooking
  • Fishing
  • Gardening
  • Painting
  • Participating in sports
  • Photography
  • Playing a musical instrument

Hobbies can provide a great sense of fulfilment and satisfaction.

Reflection

We can make the most of our time when we respect the differences between these four activities.
